Pick Colwood is doing more than just picking up litter - we're also collecting data to help prevent it in the first place. By tracking what types of litter are most common and where they accumulate, we can focus cleanup efforts where they're needed most, identify major sources, and work with business and the community on solutions. It also allows us to measure progress over time and advocate for better waste managment policies like placement of garbage bins and accountability for litterers. Most importantly, data helps shift the focus from just cleaning up to stopping litter at its source - saving time, effort, and resources in the long run. Ever noticed litter and thought, “Someone should do something about that?” Guess what—you can be that someone!
PICK Colwood (Promoting Involvement for Community Kleanup) is a volunteer group focused on reducing litter in Colwood and collecting data on the litter in our community (Where is it? What is it? How much is there?) By collecting data as well as litter, we can better understand what’s being tossed, where, and how we can tackle the problem at its root.
