Each pick involves sorting and counting the litter and grouping it into categories before the data is entered into a spreadsheet. We have defined some designated zones so that each time a zone is picked we can see the changes in litter volume and composition. This data will enable us to make informed recommendations to the City of Colwood and propose feasible, evidence-based strategies to reduce litter and change behaviour.
Where possible, we divert this litter from the landfill and recycle it if it is clean enough. Cigarette butts are sent to TerraCycle Unsmoke Canada for recycling into other products and refundable cans and bottles are donated to youth groups.
